Cancionista estadounidense. Mientras estudiaba leyes en Indiana conoció a varios músicos de jazz, entre ellos a Bix Beiderbecke, el que grabó la primera composición de Carmichael, "Riverboat Shuffle (1924). La melodía tranquila de canciones posteriores como "Georgia (Georgia on My Mind), "Rockin' Chair y "Lazy River le otorgaron fama mundial. Escribió para filmes de Hollywood, "Thanks for the Memory, "Two Sleepy People, "Heart and Soul y "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening (premio de la Academia, 1951). Según se cree "Stardust es la canción popular más grabada de todos los tiempos. Actuó en varios filmes, entre ellos, Tener y no tener (1944) y El trompetista (1950), y escribió sus memorias The Stardust Road (1946) y Sometimes I Wonder (1965).
